Me? A Blogger?

Welcome to my blog!

My name is Janice.  I am 51 years old and have been happily married to my best friend, Jim, for almost 31 years (September 24).  We have 3 children and 3 gorgeous grandchildren.  Hillary, our oldest has a son, William.  Josh is in the middle and Sarah, our baby, has 2 beautiful little girls, Lily and Emma.  That's Lily on the right .

I have Type 2 Diabetes, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, anemic and have had several bouts of severe depression over the years.  My BMI is currently 44, which is classified as Morbidly Obese.  At my highest weight, I was Super Morbidly Obese, with a BMI of 55, so at least I have improved a bit.  I  really need to lose weight and get healthy if I want to see my grandchildren grow up.

Why start a blog?

To keep a record of my progress and keep me accountable.  If, perhaps, I get a few readers, I hope they will give me the kick in the butt that I know I will sometimes need; and I hope that I will in turn, be able to encourage someone else to keep working towards their goals.  I'm not sure yet if I will tell my close friends and family about this.  It's a little scary!

I wanted to start a blog, and actually did start to work on it over a year ago.  I initially called it Type 2 Turtle in Training because I wanted to train for a half marathon.  When I pulled it out again recently, I realized it wasn't just about training for an event, but changing many aspects of my life, therefore a transition into a healthier, better me.

Then, life happened.  My dad became very ill and was diagnosed with ALS  (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis or Lou Gehrig's Disease).  He passed away June 29, 2012.

Only a week or so later, Hillary suffered a miscarriage.

Then, Labour Day weekend, Sarah and Matt moved to Halifax with the girls.  We live in Ontario. That has been harder on me than my dad's death.  I was able to visit in September.  It was strange spending our anniversary without Jim.  It was a wonderful two hour flight.  Then, we rented a minivan and the whole family drove there for Christmas...a not-so-wonderful 23 hour drive!  Jim & I were just there in April.  I am anxiously awaiting their visit here in a couple weeks!  UPDATE:  they are here now...arrived yesterday!!!  So, I'm not so sure how much I will post over the next few weeks, but I need to get this up or I will constantly be adding updates!  : S

So, my blog was put hold for a while.  It will be evolving as I learn the ins and outs of the blogging world.  I could play for weeks with layouts, fonts and colours (I am a little OCD at times), but I have been inspired by the wonderful support of the blogging community and I really wanted to get it up.

Jim & I have started the Whole 30 program, which is a very strict 30-day start to the paleo way of eating.  You eat no grains, no dairy, no sugar (real or fake), no legumes, no processed foods and no alcohol.  Also, no "treats".  Eating even a paleo cookie is still a cookie and not helping to change bad eating habits.  Eat real food – meat, seafood, eggs, tons of vegetables, some fruit, and plenty of good fats from oils, nuts and seeds.  The first week went well.  My blood sugar and blood pressure have been great and Jim has had less stomach issues and headaches.  The familiar saying applies to us - we are "sick and tired of feeling sick and tired".  UPDATE:  Wednesday will be Day 30 and I am anxious to do our weigh-in and measurements to see how we did.  Most importantly, we are both feeling better.

I used to run.  I have done three 10 k runs, two of them with walk/run, as I discovered that is better for my blood sugars; and I walked a 10 miler.  Exercise has been sporadic for months, so it is a priority to get back into at least a little regular activity.  UPDATE:  still sporadic.

My profile picture is from the last run I did.  It was the Oasis ZooRun 10k at the Toronto Zoo, on September 24, 2011, our 29th anniversary.  I did a Personal Worst time of 1:48:17 (my first 10k was 1:32:33), running, walking, stopping to check blood sugar and also to take a few pictures...how often do you get to run past a flock of pink flamingos?  :-)

So, that is a little bit about me and where I am at now.  I will write the story of my struggles with weight in a separate post.

UPDATE:  enough of editing and rearranging paragraphs to try to get this perfect.  Time to click the Publish button.  Take a deep breath and just do it!  Wish me luck!
